The Flag Officer Challenge allows cruising sailors with just a handful or less crew to go out and enjoy some light competition without the stress of a busy start line. The venue is four races a year on Saturday morning in the bay with the start/finish line directly south of the club for spectators to enjoy. A modified pursuit format will allow each boat to have their own start and be scored against the other boats in handicap fashion. It is the hope of the race committee to have a Flag Officer or Past Commodore on one of the competing boats.
For those of you who want to compete on a higher level we have it. Not only do we host this annual regatta, our fleet is up and down the lake competing in other Tier 1 and Tier 2 LYRA events. You will always see an SBYC boat competing in these major and regional regattas: LYRA, EYC, Rochester Hospice, Oswego County Hospice, Scotch Bonnet Light House, Sail Oswego, Genesee Yacht Club Women's and Youngstown Level.

Racing is one of the attractions of our club. If you read through our history you'll find this is deep within our culture. Our members' boats are adorned with the success of the program as they actively compete around Lake Ontario and beyond. We have an active Performance Handicap Racing Fleet, Lake Ontario (PHRF-LO) fleet. More information can be found at http://www.phrf-lo.org/ . We host the annual Challenge Cup Regatta which is a Lake Yacht Racing Association (LYRA) Tier 2 counter event for the awarding of the LYRA Boat Of The Year trophy. Club racing includes Spring, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Fall and Long Distance Series racing.

Spring and Fall Series racing are each a 7 race series. Races are held on Sundays and the first gun is usually 10:30 a.m. for a two race day. The last Sunday of the series is used for race 7 and any make-up races.
Long Distance Series racing is a 5 race combination of distances including a night race around the Ford Shoal Buoy and back. These races may be on a Friday night or a Saturday and are designed annually by the Fleet Captain.
Memorial Day and Labor Day Series racing are each a 3 race series. This is a great way for beginner to get involved in racing their boats. This series will have races on Saturday leaving the holiday for family fun.
