RC Racing

At Sodus Bay Yacht Club we enjoy a year-round active RC racing program that any member is welcome to join! RC racing is appealing for its relatively low equipment cost, low maintenance, and accessibility. Our program focuses on having fun, building knowledge as a fleet, and providing an excuse to spend more time on our favorite waterfront. We welcome all classes of RC sailboats, and skippers of any skill level. We have many events where all classes share a common start, and other events where we offer class starts. There are no performance handicaps in our RC program. Our goal is to have fun, and encourage growth in sailing skills through a competitive and supportive atmosphere. Our events are family friendly.

What We Sail

We welcome all classes of RC sailboats, and skippers of any skill level to join the fun! However, if you are new to RC racing SBYC then knowing that SBYC is currently trying to build a One Design Fleet may be useful information. One Design racing levels the playing field and promotes skill over technology. With this in mind, we are actively building an AMYA recognized fleet of DragonFlight 95 boats. The DF95 uses cutting edge components not found in other manufactured RC Yacht models including: Carbon fiber keel fin, advanced design keel bulb, Shroud-less keel-stepped, one piece carbon mast, and Mylar sails. It is designed to be a convenient size, on and off the water.

The DF95's light weight and long, narrow hull give it impressive light air performance. The nearly one-meter length does a great job handling the open-water swell of the bay, and is large enough to provide distance visibility for sail trim as well. A complete package is available for approximately $500, and the stock setup is competitive on a national level without further upgrades required.

RC Racing Events

Yes, we even race in the cold season. It's a great excuse to get outside and have some fun and competition. Check out what we are up to now. Notices of Race and Sailing Instructions can be found below:
